ORGANIC

CONCEPT

he Medicine Wheel and the meaning of each variation of its four quadrants are to play an imperative role in the overall design and ambiance of the Nehiyawak Community Centre.  The groups need for a multi-use community location will be met through the implementation and creation of spaces tailored to encourage members physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.  The Cree believe a balance of these four quadrants equate to a harmonious life in all aspects, thus, incorporating them in the center’s design will create a harmonious gathering place.

The centre will express relation to the land it resides upon through the use of local materials, biophilia, exposed raw elements, natural light, and outdoor spaces.  Tobacco, sweet grass, sage, and cedar, all quadrants on the wheel representative of ceremonial plants for healing, will be incorporated through material selection and colour.  Tactility will also be considered in ensuring the space feels organic and connected to the land and earth below.  Emphasis will be put on culturally enriching the space through the application of local Cree artwork and antiquity, as well as through space provision for traditional practices.

T

Floor Plan

The centre was designed with curvilinear walls and forms to mimic the organic lines found in nature, and create way-finding towards integral spaces.

Curtain windows bring the outside in, allowing inhabitants of the interior spaces to feel connected to the surrounding land.  Bleached cedar flanks the ceilings and select walls, providing warmth, and guiding visitors towards additional spaces.
